Residents Discover the Joy of Gamelan Music

This December, our residents had a fantastic time taking part in a six-week Gamelan music project. For those who don’t know, Gamelan is the traditional music of Indonesia, played on beautiful instruments like gongs, chimes, drums, and xylophones. It’s all about working together, and everyone’s contribution is equally important – something our residents embraced wholeheartedly!

The sessions were a wonderful opportunity to try something completely different. No musical experience was needed, so everyone could jump in and have a go. As the weeks went on, the residents got to know the instruments and each other even better, and the music they made was truly something special. It was also a lovely chance to learn about Indonesian culture and its focus on teamwork, respect, and reflection.

Even though the room was a bit chilly, it didn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm. The six weeks flew by, and on 20th December, we wrapped things up with a little celebration to mark the end of the project. The feedback from the group who ran it was just lovely – they couldn’t say enough about how engaged and positive everyone was. They also praised our support workers, Morgan and Alex, for the amazing care and encouragement they gave to everyone throughout.

Here’s what Jane, from the organisers Good Vibrations, said:
“We’ve had such a great time working with the group at Kingsacre. The residents have been brilliant, and Morgan and Alex have been incredible – they’ve made sure everyone felt supported and included. It’s been a real pleasure!”

Beyond the music, this project gave our residents the chance to step out into the community, meet new people, and try something completely new. Everyone really enjoyed the experience, and we’re already hoping to do it all again in the future!
